For a family having 2-3 children, you need around $50K ($50,000) annually (after tax) to live decently in Sydney. Other cities in Australia can be less costly, especially the cost of accommodation. This amount is usually achievable if you work full time in any field, including a cashier at a grocery store, a cleaner, or a security guard. For a single person, who lives in a shared accommodation, he/she needs around a quarter of this amount. So, if a man decides to come alone (without his wife or children), he should be able to survive on around $1,000 every month ($500 for rent and $500 for everything else.)

If you get a professional job, e.g. IT, accountant, engineer, doctor, and you have around 10 years of experience, you should be able to make around $100k annually, but around a 3rd of that goes to the tax man.
Getting your 1st professional job in Australia can be very difficult. Most employers require local experience. For most people, it takes 3-6 months (sometimes much longer) to get your 1st job, and you might not be paid a good salary for your 1st job. You might get only around $50K-$70K (before tax). If you are concerned about survival, you need to be flexible in accepting any work for any salary at the beginning.
Some professionals give up on their original profession and start doing something else, e.g. work as a security guard, which pays good money. There is nothing wrong with that. Some other people might decide to study something completely new or something, which can help them develop their skills.
Make sure you have a good Resume/CV. A good Resume should NOT have any personal information, other than name, address, phone number and email address. It should NOT have age, gender or photo. For around 5 years of experience, the Resume should be only 1 page. If you have longer experience, the Resume should be only 2 pages. Make sure there are no spelling or grammar mistakes in it.
If you are applying for professional jobs, make sure you have a good, updated LinkedIn profile. Make sure all your skills are listed. Moreover, it is recommended to have 2 recommendations for each job you had. Recommendations do NOT need to be from your previous managers. Customer recommendations provide a good perspective on dealing with customers. Recommendations from subordinates and team members provide other important perspectives.
In addition to LinkedIn, following are some of the good job hunting websites.
Your best source of employment opportunities is connections.
