I suggest you consider the following when deciding on which suburb(s) to focus on while searching for a property to buy/rent.
1. The quality of the schools in the area. Check this question for information on choosing good schools.
2. If you are religious, proximity (how close) to places of worship places, which are related to your religion, e.g. mosques.
3. Proximity to people having a similar background to yours. This should make it easier for you to find restaurants and grocery stores selling the stuff, which you are used to eating. The following link provides some information about the ethnicity distribution in Sydney.

4. Proximity to public transportation, especially train stations. In Sydney, most IT jobs are in the city, North Sydney or Chatswood. If you live "near" one of the train stations, which are on the North Line, chances are you can arrive to work in a relatively short time.
Your next option is to live "near" any train station. You can take the train to Central Station. Then, change trains to wherever you want to go.
I mean by "near" a train station, a walking distance from the train station.
If you cannot find something within walking distance from a train station, your next option is a train station where there is plenty of parking spots near it. In this case, you can drive to the station and park your car there.
If the above fails, you would have to either (1) drive all the way to work, which can be very expensive and tiring, or (2) take the bus.
